Actress Mary Tyler Moore, one of the best-known television leads in history, almost missed out on becoming a household name. After minor TV roles throughout the 1950s and ’60s, she finally made it big with “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1970. Her portrayal of a successful, funny woman who wasn’t focused on romance catapulted her into stardom. Reflecting on her life and career in a 1997 interview, Moore said, “Take chances, make mistakes. That’s how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage.” Her words remind us not to be discouraged by setbacks, as they often come before our biggest successes.

Motivation

Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play.

Jane Goodall

For more than 60 years, Jane Goodall studied the social and family life of chimpanzees, and she was considered the world’s leading expert on these particular primates. But her path wasn’t easy: Her initial studies faced criticism from her primarily male colleagues, many of whom saw her as lacking objectivity. Yet it was her close relationship with the chimpanzees that allowed her to see the animals in a whole new light — and to see them as far more similar to humans than the scientific community typically believed. Goodall’s career inspired countless others to fight for environmental conservation and animal rights. As this quote reminds us, on this planet — our only home — everyone has the ability to make a difference.

Happiness

Everything that truly makes us happy is quite simple: love, sex, and food!

Meryl Streep

From time immemorial, great minds have attempted to pin down the source of happiness, and to beloved actress and three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep, joy is a fairly simple matter. “Everything else — power, influence, strength — all those things can overpower what's important in life,” she said in a 2011 interview with “The Talks.” Streep pointed out that the best pleasures in life are often the most basic human needs — the secret is to never take them for granted.

Hope

The excursion is the same when you go looking for your sorrow as when you go looking for your joy.

Eudora Welty

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1909, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Eudora Welty set her stories in the American South she knew and loved. Through the use of mythology and folklore motifs, Welty explored the significance of place and the transformative nature of travel. In her 1943 short story “The Wide Net,” Welty’s protagonist William Wallace Jamieson undergoes a life-altering change when he’s forced to face the mysteries of nature. Through the words of local wise man Old Doc, Welty emphasizes that our approach to life is what ultimately shapes the outcome of our experiences. This quote encourages introspection and reminds us that the end result of any life-changing journey is ultimately influenced by our mindset.

Wisdom

To go wrong in one's own way is better than to go right in someone else's.

Fyodor Dostoevsky

The theme of alienation from society takes center stage in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s classic 1866 novel “Crime and Punishment.” This is embodied by the novel’s protagonist, Raskolnikov, whose very name is derived from the Russian “raskolnik”, meaning “schismatic” or “divided.” He is a proud and disdainful man who looks down upon his fellow humans. In contrast, Dostoevsky created the character of Razumikhin, a humanist with a strong sense of morality. He doesn’t become gloomy or resigned at the thought of failure — instead, he celebrates it. “Through error you come to the truth!” he proclaims in the monologue that contains this quote. “I am a man because I err! You never reach any truth without making fourteen mistakes and very likely a hundred and fourteen.” These wise words from Razumikhin, whose own name comes from the Russian word “razum” (meaning “reason” or “intelligence”), remind us that although we will certainly fail many times throughout our lives, our failures belong to us and are vital for forging our identities.

From our first babblings to our last word, we make but one statement, and that is our life.

Richard Paul Evans

Richard Paul Evans is a prolific writer, having published dozens of books, including nonfiction works on money management and his bestselling fictional “Christmas Box” series. These words come from the series’ last installment, “The Letter,” in which a father grieves for his young daughter and finds a letter from his own estranged mother. Evans’ story focuses on the choices we make, and all the feelings, both good and bad, that ripple after them. His words here remind us that the experiences of our lives, from the difficult to the joyful, define us as much as we define them. In the end, our actions and the way we treated others will be our legacy.

You will never get any more out of life than you expect.

Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee is best remembered as a movie star and exemplary martial artist, but he also had a profoundly philosophical mind that informed his approach to life. This quote on how our expectations shape our experiences was one of many guiding principles he wrote in his journals. And he makes a great point here: If we don’t expect or envision much, whether of ourselves or of those around us, we limit our potential. But by adopting a positive and ambitious outlook, we foster more potential and invite greater possibilities. Lee’s quote echoes the influence of Zen Buddhism on his life — he believed that in order to properly prepare for his very physical job, he also needed to take good care of his mind.

French author and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry reexamined some of his personal tragedies through a different lens in his 1943 novella "The Little Prince," excerpted here. Saint-Exupéry’s real-life plane crash in the Libyan desert and the childhood death of his beloved younger brother are both weaved into this book that focuses on the contradiction between the no-nonsense busyness of adulthood and the slow, adoring wonder of childhood. This quote is spoken by a fox who visits the titular character, a young prince from a faraway star. The fox’s quote is a “secret” of earthlings that he bestows upon the extraterrestrial prince, reinforcing the boy’s idea that love, joy, and exploration usurp the concerns of more “serious” grown-up endeavors. Saint-Exupéry’s words teach us that fulfillment comes from that which is unseen and only felt, gently urging us to nurture the heart of our inner child.

F. Scott Fitzgerald knew failure intimately. This may seem strange, considering Fitzgerald is now regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. But during his lifetime, he achieved only temporary success in the 1920s, with his two novels “This Side of Paradise” and “The Beautiful and Damned.” His 1925 book "The Great Gatsby" — today hailed as a contender for the “Great American Novel” — was a commercial failure, despite generally positive reviews. By the 1930s, Fitzgerald was struggling with finances and alcoholism while his works declined in popularity. “Tender Is the Night,” his fourth and final novel — from which this quote comes — was published in 1934. Fitzgerald considered it his crowning achievement and was therefore baffled when it received little fanfare upon its release. But Ernest Hemingway reflected the thoughts of many readers when he later remarked, “A strange thing is that in retrospect [Fitzgerald’s] ‘Tender Is the Night’ gets better and better.”

If you want to look good in front of thousands, you have to outwork thousands in front of nobody.

Damian Lillard

Milwaukee Bucks point guard Damian Lillard is considered one of the greatest basketball players in NBA history. After an injury sidelined him in his junior college season, he came back stronger and was named Big Sky Conference MVP and NBA Rookie of the Year in 2013. His career has only grown since, with seven All-Star team selections and a 2020 Olympic gold medal to his name. Lillard embraces hard work off the court too, whether he’s embarking on a side career as a rapper or establishing his RESPECT Program (whose motto is “Show Up, Work Hard, and Be Kind”), which encourages attendance and kindness among high schoolers. Here, he reminds us that while our behind-the-scenes efforts may seem thankless now, they’re crucial to our future success.
