Take a canvas. Put a mark on it. Put another mark on it.

Jasper Johns

Jasper Johns is a painter, sculptor, and printmaker whose early works, completed in the 1950s, depicted invented maps and flags. They were alternately praised for their creativity and panned for their absurdity, but Johns carried on, working in different mediums as the mood struck him, and focusing always on his artistic process with little concern for the finished pieces. This quote gives us a glimpse into Johns’ philosophy of art-making. The purest form of beauty is the act of creation, and it’s something anyone can do.

Miriam Miranda has dedicated her life to protecting the culture and land of the Garífuna people in Honduras. Throughout her 30 years of on-the-ground activism, she has faced threats, attacks, and imprisonment; still, she fearlessly advocates for preservation. To her, the harshest opponents — big business, real estate, and tourism development, to name but a few — are no match for the power of a woman fighting for a bright, sustainable future, and a better social safety net for the younger generation. Her continued efforts are nothing if not optimistic — and even, as her words here suggest, a joyful struggle.

Emily Dickinson’s command of language and imagery is displayed not only in her poems, but also in her many letters to friends, family, and fellow writers. “Affection is like bread,” she wrote to her cousins, “unnoticed till we starve, and then we dream of it, and sing of it, and paint it…” The letter continued with this beautifully insightful and characteristically hopeful thought: “We turn not older with years, but newer every day.” Despite being a known recluse, Dickinson lived through her writing, and both her life and her works remain an inspiration to artists across the creative spectrum.

Love

We are all afraid to say too much, to feel too deeply, to let people know what they mean to us.

Bianca Sparacino

Inspirational author Bianca Sparacino reminds us here that letting others know how much we care is both a beautiful and courageous act, and one that can be surprisingly hard to do. Writing for “Thought Catalog,” Sparacino warned that while it’s tempting to avoid making ourselves vulnerable, putting up walls will close us off to the world, while being honest, expressive, and emotionally raw only strengthens the bonds between people. There’s no shame in telling a friend or family member how beloved they are, so seize that opportunity before it passes.

Happiness

The first time you do something only happens once.

Chris Burden

Performance and sculpture artist Chris Burden’s work often involved moments that had to be experienced. In his 1975 piece “Doomed,” he lay under a glass sheet for 45 hours and then broke the glass with a hammer. Burden was known for the risks he took in constructing his work, from physical injury to backlash for political pieces. His words here encourage us to seek out new experiences, because those are the moments that expand our horizons the most.

Wisdom

Our ultimate freedom is the right and power to decide how anybody or anything outside ourselves will affect us.

Stephen Covey

First published in 1989, Stephen Covey’s book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide and is widely regarded as one of the most influential self-help books ever written. By all accounts a down-to-earth, kind man of intellect and faith, Covey built his teachings around the concept of nurturing win-win relationships — the idea that we will never succeed long term in any endeavor unless we strive, in all we do, to make sure that the people we work with benefit as much as we do.

Hope

Our real blessings often appear to us in the shape of pains, losses, and disappointments.

Joseph Addison

When, in 1702, British, Dutch, and Austrian troops beat the French at the Battle of Blenheim during the War of the Spanish Succession, English poet, essayist, and playwright Joseph Addison was asked to commemorate the occasion with a poem. The finished work was a wild success, and eventually led Addison to a career in politics. He wrote essays and plays throughout his later life, even as he moved through various government positions. He retired just a year before his death in 1719, but his prose lives on in lines like this one, cementing his position as one of the most influential writers of his time.

The best advice I ever got when I was starting out: Never give up. And I never did.

Rita Moreno

After Rita Moreno won an Oscar for the role of Anita in the 1961 film “West Side Story,” she waited seven years for her next film. Moreno had aspirations for herself beyond the stereotypical “island girl” box Hollywood wanted to put her into, and the roles she was offered weren’t of the caliber she felt she deserved. In 1969, she starred in "The Night of the Following Day" alongside Marlon Brando, and her star kept rising from there. The triple threat’s perseverance paid off: She became the first Latina performer to EGOT (that is, win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), among countless other honors that make her a living legend. Even when the industry wanted to give up on Moreno, she never gave up on herself: She chose the challenging path, and in the end, it was the most gratifying one.

This line from Alain Badiou’s 2012 book “In Praise of Love” is followed by the author’s insistence that “the adventurous side is necessary, but equally so is the need for tenacity.” Born in France in 1937, Badiou explored the idea of love as a magnificent undertaking that forever changes the two individuals who choose to persist through the challenges they will inevitably encounter. Love, he argued, is the much-needed antidote to the self-interest that consumes so much of the world today; it is our greatest hope for connection and understanding.
