This Buddhist proverb emphasizes the idea that contentment and satisfaction come from appreciating what we already have, and not always seeking more. Buddhism adheres closely to the concept that desiring more than what we have causes suffering. It instead emphasizes nonattachment, which suggests that we should not cling to material possessions or experiences, as these things are often out of our control, and the constant longing for them can lead to dissatisfaction. Instead, we should aim to cultivate inner peace and contentment through acceptance and gratitude for what we already have.

Only one mountain can know the core of another mountain.

Frida Kahlo

The romance between artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera was legendary. By all accounts, they inspired and infuriated each other in equal measure. The two were married in 1929, but fought often and were both known to have extramarital affairs. They divorced in 1939, only to remarry again a year later. Through it all, they featured prominently in each other’s art, and Kahlo in particular wrote effusively about her feelings for Rivera. This quote, from a love letter to her husband, speaks of two unique but deeply connected personalities that understood each other like no one else could.

Find the thing you do well and do it again and again for the rest of your life.

Jóhann Jóhannsson

It took time for Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson to find his place in the music world. Beginning his musical studies at age 11, he abandoned formal training as a teenager and instead spent more than a decade experimenting with different compositions and genres. Once he struck the unique mix of acoustic and electronic sounds that now defines his work, Jóhannsson began releasing his own albums. He went on to compose numerous orchestral pieces and film scores, including "The Theory of Everything" (2014), "Arrival" (2016), and "Last and First Men" (2020). His devotion to mastering his art encourages us not to give up on finding the spark in our lives — the thing that drives us and makes us feel most alive.

Wisdom

The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases.

Carl Jung

The son of a pastor, with clergy on both sides of his family, Carl Jung seemed destined to become a minister — until, in his teens, he began studying philosophy. His reading inspired him to pursue a career in medicine and become a psychiatrist. From early on in his career, he worked with association tests, cataloging the unique responses people had to various visual and auditory stimuli. He was the first to use the terms “introvert” and “extrovert” to describe personalities, and the first to propose the idea of a collective unconscious. He worked with and studied thousands of people throughout his life, ultimately coming to the conclusion that there is no one-size-fits-all answer for how to live and be happy; each of us is distinct in the world.

You live out the confusions until they become clear.

Anaïs Nin

Born in Paris to Cuban parents, Anaïs Nin was a prolific writer who detailed the intimate details of her personal life in numerous journals, many of which were eventually published. Nin’s shrewd understanding of the human condition is reflected in this quote from a November 1941 journal entry, in which she addressed a friend’s instinct to run from confusion. “You can’t run away,” she told her friend. “It’s destructive.” Facing life’s uncertainties head on — even if it means muddling through them until we find clarity — is how we come to better understand who we are and what we want.

Even for one of the most influential scientific geniuses in history, knowledge was not the ultimate end goal. In Albert Einstein’s 1931 collection of essays titled “Cosmic Religion: With Other Opinions and Aphorisms,” he argued that the apparent dualities of science and religion, knowledge and imagination, and logic and wonder are in fact compatible, and together they enrich the human experience. Einstein spoke frequently about imagination, which he believed was a crucial component of scientific progress. "Logic will get you from A to B," he said. "Imagination will take you everywhere." The famed physicist reminds us that it is imagination that gives wings to knowledge, by pointing the way to new possibilities.

There is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.

Virginia Woolf

Virginia Woolf’s extended essay “A Room of One’s Own” is one of the seminal texts of feminist literature. The essay explored a range of themes, from gender inequality and the subjectivity of truth, to the nature of creativity and the need for financial independence. The essay’s title derives from this latter point, asserting that “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” Woolf praised Jane Austen and Emily Brontë, who each had the strength and freedom of mind to ignore the pressures of criticism in a patriarchal society, and produced truly authentic literature. These two authors, Woolf explained, were unshrinking in their genius and integrity. “They wrote as women write, not as men write,” Woolf observed — which, especially in their time, was a brave act of creative defiance.

I will either find a way, or make one.

Hannibal

In 218 BCE, during the Second Punic War, the great Carthaginian general Hannibal led his army from modern-day Spain all the way to Italy and toward Rome, in one of the most famous military achievements in history. As the troops neared the daunting peaks of the Alps, Hannibal’s generals warned him they would not be able to cross the mountain range with the horses and elephants they brought with them. Refusing to be deterred, Hannibal responded with the quote above: “Aut inveniam viam aut faciam.” He and his troops forged their own path across the mountains, and continued their march through Italy.
