Performance and sculpture artist Chris Burden’s work often involved moments that had to be experienced. In his 1975 piece “Doomed,” he lay under a glass sheet for 45 hours and then broke the glass with a hammer. Burden was known for the risks he took in constructing his work, from physical injury to backlash for political pieces.
