10 Friendship Quotes From ‘Sex and the City’

We couldn’t help but wonder: What was it about the four best friends in HBO’s Sex and the City that had audiences entranced for six seasons? Running from 1998 to 2004, Sex and the City told the story of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), a character based on the real-life columnist Candace Bushnell. Both Bushnell and her fictional counterpart lived in New York City and wrote a racy newspaper column that was eventually turned into a book. But while men, shoes, and cocktails feature prominently in the column and TV series alike, the gravitational center of the show was the friendship shared by Carrie and her three best friends: Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis).
Samantha was the opulent and sexually liberated publicist, hob-nobbing with the stars. Miranda worked as a high-powered (and highly cynical) lawyer. Charlotte dreamed of having the perfect family. Like so many real-life friends, they didn’t always agree on everything, but they could talk about anything. Audiences tuned in, show after show, to hear these four women discuss love, sex, work, style, and the dizzying single life in Manhattan.
Even as the characters’ lives moved them away from each other, their friendship remained solid. The show (and its later films and reboot) was, perhaps above all, a recognition of female friendships, and how the bonds women form can help us endure even the most difficult of times. In honor of Best Friends Day on June 8, we’ve collected our favorite Sex and the City quotes about BFFs.
