The 95th Academy Awards are just around the corner, with the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood once again set to host the world’s most spectacular gathering of actors, directors, and other big names in cinema. The most prestigious award, as always, is given for the Best Picture. Since the first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929, there have been 591 films nominated for Best Picture, with 94 winners, the first being the silent film Wings.
In 2023, there are 10 movies nominated in the Best Picture category. It’s an eclectic mix that includes everything from epic science fiction to Irish tragicomedy to the long-awaited return of Tom Cruise as the hotshot pilot Maverick. This year also includes a remake of All Quiet on the Western Front, an older version of which won Best Picture back in 1930. The latest adaptation of the 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque is in German — should it win, it will become only the second non-English-language film to win Best Picture, after the 2019 winner, Parasite.
