Three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and author Carl Sandburg was intrigued by the human condition, specifically as it relates to class divides and the common man. In “Incidentals,” his slim volume of poetry and prose published in 1904, the “workingman’s poet” (as Sandburg became known) wrote that he had witnessed “the extremes of magnificence and destitution” yet still remained an idealist. “I can see humanity blundering on toward some splendid goal,” Sandburg mused.
