17 Empowering Quotes from Female Athletes

Organized sports are nearly as ancient as civilization itself, with roots stretching back millennia to the first Olympic Games in ancient Greece in 776 BCE. However, prior to the 1800s, women were largely either excluded from sports or only encouraged to participate in traditionally “ladylike” activities such as horseback riding and swimming. Women weren’t allowed to compete in the Olympic Games until the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, more than 2,500 years after the first iteration of the event was held in Athens.

Since then, women have been fighting to bat, volley, swim, pedal, and run their way through glass ceilings that have been put in place by an overwhelmingly patriarchal society and sports industry. Compared to their male counterparts, female athletes are often paid less, receive fewer corporate sponsorships, and have to deal with lower audience viewership. Despite these unfair setbacks, countless powerful women have proved they can work — and play — just as hard as anyone else.

From 1950s track stars to modern MMA idols, we’ve rounded up 17 of the most inspiring and empowering quotes from female athletes of the last 70 years, as a reminder that girl power is real, unapologetic, and incredible.
